P0134 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
What it means
The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 (before the catalytic converter, on the side with cylinder 1) isn't sending a changing signal. A healthy sensor switches rapidly between rich and lean; this one is stuck or flat, so the computer can't fine-tune the fuel mixture.
Severity: Moderate
Can I drive it? Usually drivable short-term, but fuel economy often drops and the engine may run rich, which can damage the catalytic converter over time. Fix it soon.
Common causes (most likely first)
- Failed or contaminated upstream oxygen sensor
- Damaged, chafed, or corroded sensor wiring or connector
- Faulty O2 sensor heater circuit (often with P0135)
- Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor
- Rarely, an engine computer fault
Likely fixes
- Inspect the sensor wiring and connector for damage or melted insulation
- Check for exhaust leaks near the front sensor
- Replace the bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor
- Clear the code and confirm the sensor switches on a scan tool
