P0134 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

What it means

The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 (before the catalytic converter, on the side with cylinder 1) isn't sending a changing signal. A healthy sensor switches rapidly between rich and lean; this one is stuck or flat, so the computer can't fine-tune the fuel mixture.

Severity: Moderate

Can I drive it? Usually drivable short-term, but fuel economy often drops and the engine may run rich, which can damage the catalytic converter over time. Fix it soon.

Common causes (most likely first)

  1. Failed or contaminated upstream oxygen sensor
  2. Damaged, chafed, or corroded sensor wiring or connector
  3. Faulty O2 sensor heater circuit (often with P0135)
  4. Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor
  5. Rarely, an engine computer fault
